on january 20th. and our dan lothian is at the white house right now. hello, dan. give us a feel for what happened. who was in the room for the swearing-in, how long it lasted. we saw it on television. it was pretty short. the mood and any other details you might have for us. >> reporter: think the headline here is that the oath was administered without a hitch. there were no problems at all. as you remember four years ago, there were some problems with some words moved out of place, stepping on each other, the president and chief justice roberts. this time, it went off without a hitch. it was a very intimate setting in the white house blue room, the president surrounded by some close family members and friends. the first lady, his daughters, also his sister and his mother-in-law and brother. and it was a short event. only lasted for about 30 seconds. and then afterwards, sort of a colorful moment, where the president was hugging the first lady, hugging the first daughters and then his daughter, sasha, his youngest daughter, saying to the president, "well, you didn't mess up," again, maki

international correspondent dan rivers. he's in london to to see bring us the latest. good morning. what can you tell us then about the reports of this final assault? >> reporter: well, this is being carried out by algerian state-run television saying that seven further victims have been recovered and 11 militants. now it's really difficult to grasp the total number of hostages that have been killed so far. we're trying to put it together, but they probably include japanese, brits, malasians, possibly some norwegians and other nationalities. it's very difficult to know the final numbers. but adding up what we know it could be up to at least 32 missing and possibly up to 26 confirmed dead, although those numbers have been changing a lot. that gives you a sense of the scale of this anyway. among those, at least one american i'm afraid confirmed dead. six americans confirmed rescued, freed. and those details as i say, we're hoping to try and get more clarification in the coming hours. >> what is being said about this crisis there in britain? >> reporter: well, william hague, the british foreign sec

. for that i want to bring in my colleague, white house correspondent dan lothian. dan, let's talk about priorities for the president's second term but first it's an interesting little nugget of history. this is a historic day and also a historic inauguration for president obama because he's going to match only fdr in getting two double swear-ins or four swearing-ins if you will. why is that? >> first of all, look back to 2009 when justice roberts and the president kind of stepped on each other, the word "faithfully" out of order, there was a question whether or not it was legitimate so, they had a second one in the private quarters of the white house. this time around the constitution says you have to administer the oath before noon on the 20th. on sunday is not typically when we have the inauguration, so they'll have a private ceremony in the blue room on sunday and then on monday they'll have the official sort of public swearing-in for the president. >> and the parade and pomp and circumstance we expect in an inauguration ceremony. so, tuesday the pomp and circumstance monday, tuesday

themes and we just learned this from dan lothian who covers the white house. this is sort of the fact that the president is confronting the reality of a divided washington that he'll be acknowledging that there are some divisions but he'll talk about how there's responsibility to work on issues where there are common ground and, of course, this is considered certainly a speech that is somewhat hard to deliver not only because historically second inaugurals are not always very memorable but also because it's situated in a very weird place temp porely for president obama. we've just had the fiscal cliff battle. there's an upcoming one with the debt ceiling. ep has to acknowledge this not so pretty reality in the washington as he gives a speech that's supposed to be inspirational. >> the reality is the same congress he was working with on friday will be the same congress he's working with come tuesday despite the speech. we'll watch closely to see more details coming up. thank you so much. we'll watch more of this ahead. >> we always know security is tight in washington, but for the inau
